Prudence
The Virtue of Discernment
What is Prudence?
Prudence is the virtue by which we reason about what we do and know what to seek and what to avoid. As such, prudence is the 'charioteer of the virtues', directing us in our actions to what is worthy to do and avoiding what is unworthy. As such, prudence is intellectual in nature, formed and improved through study, reflection, and the practice of the other virtues, which prudence guides.
How do we develop Prudence?
Prudence is developed simultaneously with other moral virtues. When we seek to understand what is and what is not opposed to reason, and when we choose our actions according to our reason so as to develop virtue, we are also developing the virtue of Prudence, as such is Prudence's domain.
As such, uniquely among the virtues listed in this app, Prudence has no Plan and has no Tracker. Instead, it is through learning about the other virtues that we develop Prudence's knowledge of the virtues; it is through practicing the other virtues that we develop Prudence's action of ordering our actions through our reason. So to grow in this virtue, simply seek to develop in other virtues.
